The evolution of makeup over the past 100 years (part II)

In the previous article, we mentioned what makeup was like in the early to mid-last century. Today we will talk about beauty trends in the late twentieth century – early XXI. Therefore…

The 1970s: DISCO STYLE

The ‘70s is an era of freedom. During this period, different subcultures appear with their own ideas about beauty: it is enough to compare hippies and punks! Also in fashion is the disco style, which has given us many bright trends in both clothing and makeup.

Face

For the first time, the concept of glowing skin appears, and a completely matte, “porcelain” face becomes irrelevant. Shiny particles are added to powder, shadows and even some foundations. Pearlescent lipsticks are especially popular. Tanning is in vogue, the first bronzers appear. In the same period, the world’s first auto tan appears!

Eyebrows

Again, there was a tendency to thin eyebrows, but not everyone followed the trend. Most women left it natural.

Eyes

In the ‘70s came up with smoky eyes, but popular was not only this makeup but also makeup bright eye shadows. The most trendy shades were green, navy and blue.

Lips

The girls paid more attention to the eyes. And if painted the lips, then peach lipstick was used. The colour on the lips did not argue with the emphasis on the eyes.

The 1980s: MAKEUP WITHOUT RULES

Colours to be! In the ‘80s, beautiful makeup is bright makeup. Neon shadows, false eyelashes, juicy blush and rich lipstick: “too much” in those years could not be. The most fashionable shade is fuchsia (whether we are talking about shadows, lipstick or blush). Sophistication is replaced by challenge and outrage.

Eyebrows

It was not a key detail of the appearance. However, sometimes eyebrows emphasized, looking at the look of Madonna.

Eyes

One thing was seldom chosen in eye makeup. It was bright and accent: massive eye wings, blue shadows, and it is better to mix several shades.

Lips

Bright fuchsia lipstick and more shine! Avon and Maybelline produce lip glosses with the taste of apple, strawberry, orange and chocolate.

The 1990s: FROM NATURAL TO GRUNGE AND GLAM

Bright colours went as fast as they came. In the ‘90s matte leather is in vogue, natural eyebrows and natural makeup. Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston (Friends), becomes a style icon. Brown-beige shades are a 100% hit, both in makeup and hairstyles.

Face

Powder in balls becomes insanely popular – the first “Meteorites” from Guerlain. Since then, several dozen versions of the famous powder and many limited editions were presented.

Eyebrows

It was finely plucked and painted with either a pencil or shadows so that it could be seen on the face.

Eyes

In the ‘90s, the girls had many options to choose. For example, natural makeup with slightly tinted eyelashes, grunge with a carelessly drawn eye contour, and glamorous smoky bright colours. Shades with a frosty effect – blue and purple – were especially popular.

Lips

Brown-beige tones prevailed in lip makeup. And brown lipsticks and glosses, mostly pearlescent shades were distributed in hundreds of thousands of copies.

The 2000s: MAKEUP OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Most beauty trends were set by new pop stars: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani and others. Shadows with sequins, thick eyelashes, lip gloss, eyebrow-threads, interest in Latin American stars – Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek – promotes tanning: tanning beds and wipes compete with tanning beds and wipes.

Face

The fashion for dark skin lasted a surprisingly long time, everyone imitated the “blonde in chocolate” Paris Hilton. Only at the end of the decade did the flashy auto-tan and sequins begin to take a stand in favour of nudity.

Eyebrows

People have not known yet that in 10 years Cara Delevingne would become a superstar and make everyone grow sable eyebrows.

Eyes

During this period, the eyes were applied in dim neutral shades, adorning with black eye wings and mascara.

Lips

On the lips wore transparent gloss or peach lipstick. Angelina Jolie, already a superstar, is introducing grey-beige lipstick (brands are beginning to produce similar colours).

2010: FREEDOM TO BE YOURSELF

The last decade is characterized as the most diverse: the cosmetics industry offers all possible hues and textures. But after the onset of 2010, girls increasingly returned to their origins. Many fell in love with natural makeup.

Face

The motto of recent years is naturalness in everything. There are CC-creams with the lightest texture and masking effect, primers that give the skin radiance, products with the effect of skin glow, eyebrow gels in a neutral shade, a mascara with the effect of natural eyelashes.

Eyebrows

In 2010 there was a real brow-boom. Eyebrow makeup has become an independent and mandatory stage of the process.

Eyes

Classic black eye wings, smoky eyes with glitter, a haze in the colour of rose gold, “wet” eyelids with a glossy glow – these are just a few of the trends that were relevant and still do not give up their positions.

Lips

Matte lipsticks became a hit of this period. They were dry, liquid, creamy. Powder shades of such lipsticks and bright classics – red, burgundy, fuchsia became a must-have.

The transition from the 2010s to nowadays was marked by maximum naturalness. What awaits us next? Let’s see!
